one room challenge: nicky's hygge bedroom (week 6 reveal!)
We made it to Week 6 of Calling It Home’s Spring 2017 One Room Challenge! If you are just joining us, here’s a look at where we’ve been so far in week 1 (and 2), week 3, week 4, and week 5. HUGE thank you to Linda for continuing to host this challenge twice a year. It is so fun to do and so fun to watch others do. I look forward to it every spring and fall!
Can I get a drum roll please? Because this has been a fantastic project and it needs all the fanfare….Welcome to Nicky’s Hygge Bedroom!
Don’t you want to just cozy up in all that fur? Ok, well I don’t actually because I’m in Texas and it is already hot but the important thing is that Nicky does and it is her room after all.
Nicky wanted her bedroom to be cozy, with All. The. Pillows. on her bed (preferably in the corner), lots of textures, and soft color. She was crushing on that pink that seems to be everywhere these days but was also drawn to black and white spaces. We kept the main palette of her room neutral (including the existing wall color – Benjamin Moore’s Silver Satin) so as to not be too trendy but painted the ceiling a soft pink (Benjamin Moore’s Warm Blush) and added a few blush pillows and accents. To balance out the soft pastels and to incorporate the bright colors of the Warhol Chanel print that Nicky already owned, we added a few pops of hot pink, both to Nicky’s vanity (her extra makeup lives here in nice acrylic stacking boxes) and her shelving. We also grounded the room with a fantastic black and white striped rug. The boldness of the rug is youthful and balances out the somewhat grown-up neutrals of the room.
A word or two about the non-traditional vanity. I’m biased, and I don’t even use makeup, but I love this little spot. The soft rug, the pouf, and the lights make it so cozy. If Nicky needs additional lighting, her bedside lamp is nearby. With a desk already in the room, and the bedside table on the same wall, it didn't make sense to use a traditional vanity for this space. I just love the way this spot turned out. Sounds like Nicky does too because she’s already had friends over to test drive it.
Ok, enough talking. Let’s get to the photos. But first, how about a quick trip down memory lane to see what Nicky’s room looked like before?
Your typical teen room. Cute but a little cluttered. And now, it looks like this.
And both Nicky and her mom love it. While we purged quite a bit, stuffed animals and books that Nicky wasn't quite ready to part with are now tucked out of view in baskets and boxes. Boxes also corral cords, (lots of) paper, and craft supplies that Nicky doesn't use daily.
A huge thank you to Deb who signed up for this challenge not even knowing what to expect, who made a million trips to all the stores to find just the right things for her daughter’s room, who took hundreds of photos along the way so we could show the progress here, and who just generally did an amazing job getting her daughter’s room to come together in 5 short weeks. We are still waiting for a few prints from society6 to arrive (see that empty frame above the shelves? this is supposed to be delivered today for that frame and this is still on its way and the correct mat for that amazing print above the desk is getting cut as we speak...), but otherwise, this room is done.
